When Math Matters in Translation
At a recent, I joked with my fellow translators that literary translation is half about linguistics, half about literary reading and writing, and half about cross cultural communication – but based on those numbers, it’s clearly not about math.
But if you’re going to make a living as a translator, the math matters too. You’ve got to be able to manage the numbers if you’re going to run an effective translation business.
One of the questions I’m often asked by new or emerging translators is how much to charge for work. This can be a tricky question, because there are several sides that have to be considered.
