Diasporic + Clan
There’s an event coming up on 25 March that should prove to be very exciting, the launch of Yeo Wei Wei’s Diasporic + Clan, a two-part collection that features her translations, transcreations, and adaptations of Soon Ai Ling’s short story collection "人也•女也" (you can sign up for the event here).
I’m very interested in this project not only because of the work that has been translated, but also because of the process involved. This project has explored various approaches to carrying over a work from one language to another – which is why it is billed as “translations, transcreations, and adaptations.” It is a very good opportunity to explore the different approaches one might take and how those approaches determine the shape of the text in the new language. I’m very much looking forward to hearing Wei Wei’s insights on this process.
As part of the launch, there will be a screening of Eva Tang’s The Veiled Willow, a short film adaptation of one of Soon Ai Ling’s works, followed by a discussion with Yeo Wei Wei, Eva Tang and Soon Ai Ling, titled "A Conversation about Film and Literary Adaptations". The three panellists will share more about their experience with adaptation into the different artistic forms.
You can register for the event here.
Following the launch, Tender Leaves and the Singapore Book Council will be co-hosting our second Translator’s Get-Together. This event will include an Open Mic, where you can read a selection from your translated work. We really hope you’ll join us for this event and share some of your translations with the community. Please register here.
We look forward to seeing you on the 25th!
