Call for Submission: Notes Along the Way
This is an invitation for you to submit your work for inclusion in A Polite Lie.
Translators of all levels – beginners to experts – are invited to submit your reflections on a specific problem you’ve encountered in your practice.
Guidelines
I am looking for short works or excerpts, preferably no more than 600 words, translated from any language.
Your translation must include a reflection on the problems presented by the excerpt you have selected and the various options available to you for solving the problem.
If you have settled on a solution to the problem, please include that and explain why you think it the best solution.
If you have not settled on a solution yet, do not hesitate to send your work.
The purpose of this series is to reflect on problems as they arise and the thought processes that go into finding acceptable solutions to them.
For examples of the sort of article I’d like to see, take a look at the Notes Along the Way posts (here, here, and here) I’ve put up at the site in recent months. Recent contributions to the series have come from Kevin Martens Wong, Pow Jun Kai, and Miho Kinnas.
Each accepted piece will be given a byline and will be made available as a public post (i.e., not behind a paywall), though if it is a work in progress and you prefer to keep the excerpt behind a paywall, that can be arranged.
Please email your submissions in a Word document to
